In the Desert
By Stephen Crane
In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial.
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter -- bitter," he answered,
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And becasuse it is my heart."
A Man Said to the Universe
By Stephen Crane
A man said to the universe:
"Sir, I exist!"
"However," replied the universe
"The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation."
Please, don't copy these poems because they are not mine to give out. I
place them on my portion of the Net much like I place items on my wall.
Anyone who comes to visit can easily read what I've hung, but I don't let
them take my stuff when they leave.
